Police at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe have arrested a 49-year-old man on suspicion of illegally possessing and attempting to externalise foreign currency without supporting documentation.

Airport Police spokesperson Sapulain Chitonde Lee identified the suspect as George Augustus Chinangwa.

According to Lee, the arrest took place on Thursday during a routine search of passengers boarding a Malawian Airlines flight to Johannesburg.

Chinangwa was allegedly found in possession of ZAR10,000 (ten thousand South African rand) without the required documentation from a bank or authorised foreign exchange bureau.

“Chinangwa was subsequently arrested, and the foreign currency was confiscated pending further investigations,” said Lee.

He added that the suspect is expected to face two charges,  illegal possession and attempted externalisation of foreign exchange, once all legal formalities are completed.
