The Thyolo Magistrates’ Court has acquitted Enosi Biniweli Mathewe, who was accused of submitting false documents to the National Registration Board (NRB) to obtain a death certificate.

Mr Mathewe admitted in court that his mother had died and that he sought the certificate in order to claim benefits from a SACCO following her death.

The 54-year-old, who works as a Health Surveillance Assistant (HSA) at Lomola Hospital in the district, said he acted because he had accumulated debts from his mother’s funeral. She died in January at the age of 95.

Magistrate Thomson Sikweya said the accused’s health condition, his years of service to Malawi, and his lack of a criminal record were among the reasons for his acquittal.
