A teacher in Karonga has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for sexually abusing a 12-year-old Standard 7 pupil.
The convicted teacher, Paulendo Ng’ambi, who was a senior teacher at Lufilya School, was found guilty of luring the student to his office on 10 November 2025, under the pretext of escorting her home, where he allegedly raped her.
Prosecutor Victor Jossam told the court that Ng’ambi manipulated the child by making false claims and also coerced her with written notes and copies to keep silent.
The victim reported the abuse to the deputy senior teacher at the school, who immediately escalated the matter to the police. Medical evidence confirmed that the child had been raped.
After reviewing all the evidence, the court found Ng’ambi guilty and agreed with the prosecution that a severe punishment was necessary. He was consequently sentenced to 14 years of imprisonment, with instructions to serve the term in hard labor.
