A 25-year-old third-year student at Mzuzu University has admitted to defrauding fellow students of K3.9 million through a fake transport arrangement.

Allan Chiyembekeza was arrested after collecting money from fellow students, claiming he would use the funds to purchase a vehicle that would transport them home during school holidays.

According to Augustus Nkhwazi, spokesperson for Malawi Police Service in Mzuzu, the suspect collected money from 86 students before using the funds for personal purposes.

Police say Chiyembekeza has since agreed to repay the money in instalments and has been released on bail as investigations continue.

Allan hails from Khancha Village under Senior Chief Jenala in Phalombe.
