A 42-year-old man has been killed following violent unrest in Mwanza after residents suspected him of being connected to the recent murder of two children in the district.
Enock Choipa, from Sudala Village, was reportedly attacked by an angry mob that stormed his home, destroyed property, and beat him to death.
Spokesperson for the Malawi Police Service in Mwanza, Hope Kasakula, confirmed the incident to Times 360 Malawi, stating that police are investigating the matter.
According to reports, the mob allegedly accused Choipa of being involved in the deaths of two children from the district whose bodies were discovered earlier this week. Enraged residents reportedly ransacked his house before assaulting him.
Police have strongly condemned the act of mob justice, warning that taking the law into one’s own hands leads to destruction of property and loss of innocent lives.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and they have urged members of the public to allow law enforcement officers to handle criminal matters through legal channels.
