Police in Mangochi have arrested four men in connection with the theft of 44 bags of fertiliser valued at K6.6 million.
Mangochi Police Public Relations Officer Amina Tepani Daudi identified the suspects as Pangani Damson (23), Michael (45), Bauleni Gama (38), and Gerald Phiri (57).
Daudi said the suspects are believed to have committed the offence on 30 January 2026 in the Makawa area.
“Investigations have established that Damson was employed by a businessman in Makawa. On the day of the incident, he reportedly asked for leave to travel to his home village. Shortly after, the business owner discovered that 44 bags of Urea fertiliser were missing,” said Daudi.
Police arrested Damson on 18 February in Phalombe, where he had reportedly fled. During questioning, he allegedly revealed the identities of his accomplices.
So far, 14 bags of the stolen fertiliser have been recovered, and investigations are ongoing to recover the remaining bags and establish the full circumstances surrounding the theft.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon to answer charges related to theft.
