Police in Machinga have arrested 34-year-old Pilirani Ndege, also known as Rasta Ndege, for allegedly being found in possession of Indian hemp, locally known as chamba.
Machinga Police spokesperson, Western Kansire, said the suspect was arrested on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at around 2:00 p.m. near Adhoc Police Station in the district.
According to Kansire, Ndege was riding a bicycle along the Liwonde–Zomba Road when police officers stopped him and searched the bag he was carrying.
“When officers attempted to search him, the suspect fled, but police gave chase and successfully arrested him,” Kansire said.
He added that a search of the bag uncovered a large quantity of Indian hemp (chamba) packed in a jumbo bag, leading to his arrest.
The recovered substance has since been sent to Bvumbe Research Laboratory in Thyolo District for analysis, and the suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
Ndege hails from Nkalo Village under Traditional Authority Nkula in Machinga District.
