Information reaching this publication indicates that a mob in Neno District on Monday killed a man and a woman following allegations that they were involved in poisoning members of a local family.
The incident reportedly followed the deaths of two children from the same family who consumed food suspected to have been laced with poison. Five other family members were also affected and were taken to hospital for medical treatment.
Eyewitnesses said tensions escalated after one of the surviving children allegedly confessed to having been sent by one of the two suspects to put poison in the food, reportedly targeting a specific family member. The alleged confession angered members of the community, who later descended on the two individuals.
Neno District Health Office publicist Caroline Banda confirmed that some of the affected family members who had initially been discharged from hospital have since been readmitted and are now in critical condition.
Meanwhile, Neno District Police spokesperson Rebecca Msoliza said authorities are investigating the matter and that further details will be provided later.
Police have appealed to members of the public to remain calm and allow law enforcement agencies to handle the case.
