Two women in their twenties have been arrested in Uganda on allegations of engaging in same-sex conduct in public.
According to a report by DW Africa News, neighbors alerted police after allegedly witnessing the two women kissing openly. The neighbors further claimed that several young women were frequently seen visiting the suspects’ residence.
The two are reportedly being investigated under Uganda’s 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act, a controversial law that criminalizes same-sex relations. The legislation provides for severe penalties, including life imprisonment for certain offences and, in specific aggravated cases, the death penalty upon conviction.
Although individuals who reported the matter to police are said to have taken photographs as alleged evidence, authorities have indicated that investigators have not yet obtained conclusive proof. Police say inquiries are ongoing to establish the facts and ensure due process.
Meanwhile, human rights organizations within Uganda have criticized the law, arguing that it has fueled fear, misinformation, and discrimination against individuals associated with the LGBTQ+ community.
The case continues to draw attention both locally and internationally as debates persist over human rights and legal protections in the country.
