Police in Lilongwe have arrested Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi.
His private lawyer, Chrispine Ndalama, has confirmed the development, saying Mpesi was taken to Lingadzi Police Station from the National Police Headquarters.
According to Ndalama, the arrest is linked to suspicions that Mpesi abused his office after a person who is not an employee of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) was allegedly found driving his official vehicle.
Police are yet to comment on the matter.
