A 34-year-old woman, Chrissy Mwale, has tragically drowned in the Phwazi River in Mzimba District.
According to reports, Mwale was on her way to Khosolo Health Centre accompanied by her three children when the incident occurred. She is said to have safely assisted all three children to cross the river. However, when it was her turn to cross, she reportedly lost her balance, fell into the river, and was swept away by the current.
Community members attempted to rescue her and rushed her to the hospital, but she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Assistant Public Relations Officer for Jenda Police Station, Godknows Malema, confirmed the incident and urged members of the public to exercise extreme caution, particularly when crossing rivers that are prone to flooding.
Police have since advised communities to avoid crossing flooded rivers to prevent similar tragedies.
