Police in Mangochi have arrested a 56-year-old man, Assani Sabiti, for allegedly causing the death of 19-year-old Blessings James through reckless driving and failing to report the accident within 24 hours.

Mangochi Police spokesperson Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi said the accident occurred on February 23, 2026, in the Kalonga residential area of Mangochi Township.

“Sabiti, who was driving a Tata light lorry, reportedly lost control of the vehicle while turning due to excessive speed and hit the victim, who was standing by the roadside,” Daudi explained.

She added that due to the impact, the victim sustained serious injuries and later died at Mangochi District Hospital while receiving treatment.

“Police arrested the suspect on February 25 after community members reported the incident, and the vehicle has since been impounded,” Daudi said.

Sabiti is expected to appear in court to answer charges of causing death by reckless driving and failing to report an accident within 24 hours.
