The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has arrested a second key suspect in connection with the robbery of K392 million that occurred on February 9, 2026, near Autotech Building in Lilongwe.
The latest arrest follows the earlier apprehension of 49-year-old Nelson Chipokosa of Nsozi Village, Traditional Authority Khongoni in Lilongwe District. Chipokosa is suspected to have played a central role in coordinating a fake foreign currency exchange deal that allegedly led to the violent robbery.
Police have now confirmed the arrest of 42-year-old Steven Kadammanja of Njema Village, Traditional Authority Chikumbu in Mulanje District.
According to police reports, the arrest turned dramatic when Kadammanja allegedly attempted to overpower one of the officers and grab a service pistol.
In response to what authorities described as an imminent threat, the officer discharged his firearm, shooting the suspect in the right arm. He was immediately subdued at the scene.
Kadammanja was rushed to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) where he is receiving medical treatment under police guard.
The Malawi Police Service says investigations are ongoing as detectives intensify efforts to recover the stolen K392,000,000 and track down other members of the suspected criminal syndicate.
Authorities have assured the public that more arrests are expected as the probe continues.
The February 9 robbery sent shockwaves across the country due to the large amount of money involved and the alleged use of a fraudulent foreign exchange transaction to lure the victim.
