Police in Kasungu have arrested two officials of Mgumila Lusa Cooperative on suspicion of stealing a tractor valued at K69 million.
The suspects, identified as 42-year-old Madalitso Chunga and 52-year-old Godfrey Njokwe, were arrested on 23 February 2026 at Mgumila Village in the district.
Confirming the development, Kasungu Police Public Relations Officer Joseph Kachikho said Chunga, who serves as chairperson of the cooperative, and Njokwe, the treasurer, allegedly connived to sell the tractor, which had been donated to the cooperative by the government.
Kachikho explained that the two allegedly took advantage of a maintenance period after the tractor developed a mechanical fault and was taken to a garage for repairs. It was during this time that they are believed to have sold the machinery.
Police have since recovered the tractor. The two suspects are expected to appear in court soon to answer charges related to the alleged theft.
Chunga hails from Chikwa Village, while Njokwe comes from Mtalimanja Village, both under Traditional Authority Chidzuma in Kasungu.
