Police in Itezhi Tezhi Zambia are investigating a gruesome suspected murder-suicide attempt following a tragic incident at Basanga Market. The authorities were alerted to the scene after a resident reported a violent confrontation within a family-owned business.
Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Chipo Kaitisha identified the deceased as 26-year-old Christabel Bulongo. According to preliminary reports, the victim was allegedly struck on the back of the head with a wooden plank by her husband, 33-year-old Kebby Shalwendo. The fatal attack reportedly took place inside the couple’s family bar.
Kaitisha confirmed that when officers arrived, they found Bulongo’s lifeless body, which was subsequently transported to Basanga Clinic. The suspect, Shalwendo, fled the scene immediately after the assault, sparking a brief manhunt in the area.
He was later discovered lying in a nearby maize field with a deep, life-threatening cut to his throat. Police recovered a knife at the scene, leading investigators to believe the suspect attempted to take his own life after the killing.
The suspect is currently battling for his life under police guard at Basanga Clinic. Kaitisha stated that while the immediate facts of the physical attack are clear, investigations into the motive and the full circumstances surrounding the domestic tragedy remain ongoing.
