Twenty-one village chiefs from the area of Group Village Headman Austine under Senior Chief Makwangwala in Ntcheu District are demanding answers over maize that was supposed to be distributed to their communities by the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) on February 19 this year.
One of the chiefs, Village Headman Zululu, said officials responsible for the distribution in the area initially registered 121 beneficiaries who were expected to receive the maize. However, on the day of the distribution, 143 people reportedly received the relief maize.
Zululu said the chiefs are concerned because some of the people who received the maize are not from their area and are unknown to them. This has raised questions about the whereabouts of 22 bags of maize and how additional beneficiaries managed to receive the relief despite their names not appearing on the list submitted by the chiefs.
The chiefs say members of their communities are struggling with hunger and had high hopes of receiving the maize after their names were registered for the relief support.
Currently, the chiefs are at the DoDMA office in Ntcheu District seeking clarification and answers regarding the missing maize and the inclusion of unknown beneficiaries in the distribution exercise.
