Human Rights Commission Investigates Death of 19-Year-Old in Police Custody

The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has filed a fresh investigation into the death of 19-year-old Nicholas Mussah, who was found dead in a police cell at Mzedi Police Unit in Chiradzulu District.
Chikondi Chijozi Jere, Chairperson of the Commission confirmed the development.
Commissioner Chijozi Jere, said the investigation aims at uncovering the circumstances surrounding Musa’s death and providing recommendations for justice delivery.
Mussah was arrested last month on suspicion of robbery and died whilst in custody.
Public Relations Officer for South West Region Police Beatrice Mikuwa, said preliminary information indicates that he committed suicide.
According to Mikuwa, the deceased was alone in the cell, using a rope to hang himself against the metal bars.
Meanwhile, Happy James Njalam’mano, Public Relations Officer-Independent Complaint Commission-ICC has also acknowledged receipt of the issue.
Njalam’mano said that the commission has since opened the file, interviewed persons of interest, in the matter and investigations are underway.
