The Principal Resident Magistrate’s Court in Zomba has sentenced 15 men to 21 years imprisonment with hard labour after being convicted of robbery and burglary.
State prosecutors Peter Njilagoma and Cliff Kalawa told the court that during the night of January 30 and 31, 2025, the group, armed with axes, pangas, knives, sticks and stones, broke into several houses and stole property valued at more than K6 million.
The stolen items included gold worth K50,000, four mobile phones and an Infinix phone valued at K180,000.
The accused persons initially pleaded not guilty, prompting the State to present 11 witnesses who testified and proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.
In delivering the sentence, Chief Resident Magistrate Roderick Michongwe agreed with the prosecution that the crime was well organised and involved suspects from different districts.
Michongwe sentenced the convicts to 21 years imprisonment with hard labour on the first four counts of robbery in company and armed with dangerous weapons, and nine years for burglary. The sentences will run concurrently.
