A 23-year-old fisherman has died after being attacked by a crocodile on Lake Kariba in Sinazongwe District in Zambia.

The victim, Lucky Mulyata of Siluwe Village, was fishing with a 19-year-old colleague when the incident occurred on March 6, 2026, around 05:00 AM at Nzenga Fishing Settlement.

According to an incident report, the two were checking fishnets in a dugout canoe when a crocodile suddenly struck the front part of the canoe where Mulyata was seated and paddling.

The impact caused him to lose control and fall into the water, where the crocodile immediately attacked and dragged him into deeper waters.

Nearby fishermen, including the survivor, attempted to rescue him, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

Southern Province Commissioner of Police Moono Namalongo said the victim’s body was later retrieved from the water at around 07:00 AM on March 7, 2026.

He added that the remains were found in a semi-decomposed state with multiple deep cuts on the head and stomach, injuries consistent with a crocodile attack.
