George Kasakula, former Director General of the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), and the broadcaster’s former Director of Finance Jack Kamwachale are expected to appear in court today to be formally charged and take plea over alleged financial irregularities.
The case follows investigations by the Malawi Police Service into suspected financial mismanagement at the public broadcaster.
Kasakula’s lawyer Bentry Nyondo said the defence team will only know the exact charges once the matter comes before the court.
Nyondo declined to provide further details but confirmed that proceedings are scheduled for today.
National Police spokesperson Lael Chimtembo said the alleged financial mismanagement is believed to have occurred between July 2021 and December 2025.
Chimtembo said the suspects are also accused of approving an unauthorised payment to a hotel in Lilongwe where Kasakula and his family allegedly stayed in a presidential suite beyond his entitlement.
Police are also investigating the procurement of an outside broadcasting vehicle from Italy that has reportedly not yet arrived in the country.
