The 1st Deputy Secretary General of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Gerald Kazembe, has resigned from his position with immediate effect.

In a resignation letter dated March 14, 2026, addressed to the party’s Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda, Kazembe said his decision followed deep reflection after the September 16, 2025 General Elections, which saw MCP lose power and move from government to the opposition benches.

Kazembe described elections as the ultimate democratic audit,” saying the outcome requires humility, reflection and renewal within the party.

In the statement, Kazembe said he had chosen to contest the elections under the MCP banner despite predictions of defeat, believing in the party’s historic mission and its potential to become a truly national political movement.

He also expressed gratitude to voters in Mangochi, particularly Mangochi M’baluku and Mangochi Monkey Bay, for their support which enabled him to win a parliamentary seat and secure a rare MCP councillor victory in the area.

However, Kazembe said current internal dynamics and the direction of the party influenced his decision to step down from the national leadership role.

After careful reflection on the current direction and internal dynamics of the party, I have concluded that it is in the best interest of both the Malawi Congress Party and my own responsibilities to the people I represent that I step aside,” he wrote.

Despite stepping down, Kazembe emphasized that he remains a member of MCP and will continue serving as a Member of Parliament under the party.

In his statement, he called for honest introspection, organisational renewal, accountability and unity within the party if it hopes to regain public confidence in the future.

Kazembe also referenced the party’s historical legacy, mentioning figures such as Hastings Kamuzu Banda, John Tembo, and Sidik Mia, while urging the party to pursue leadership that inspires national confidence.
