A man whose body was discovered in the Mudi River near the Clock Tower in Blantyre has been identified as Sakalani, a trader from Ndirande.

Sakalani, who earned a living selling second-hand vehicle tyres, is suspected to have been swept away by strong floodwaters following heavy rains that pounded parts of Blantyre on Sunday evening, beginning around 8:00 PM.

Reports indicate that he attempted to cross the overflowing Nasolo River at Nyozani, near Greenland, but was overwhelmed by the powerful current.

The raging waters are believed to have carried him over a considerable distance before his body was later recovered along the Mudi River near the Clock Tower.

He is survived by his wife and their child, Charity.

The incident has once again raised concern over the dangers of crossing flooded rivers during heavy rainfall.

Friends and community members have described Sakalani as a friendly and cheerful individual, expressing deep grief over his untimely death.

“Kwako kunali kuseka ndi anthu… mzimu wako uwuse ndi mtendere,” said one mourner.

Authorities have since urged the public to avoid crossing flooded rivers, especially during periods of intense rainfall.
