A 45-year-old Nigerian businessman, Collins Iheanacho Bernard, has been arrested at Kamuzu International Airport for alleged involvement in illicit foreign currency activities.
According to Airport Police Public Relations Officer Sapulani Chitonde Lee, the suspect was arrested on March 25, 2026, at the airport’s Forward Lounge.
Police say Iheanacho initially denied carrying any foreign currency when asked to declare his belongings. However, a thorough search uncovered US$2,800 concealed in his old passport and pockets.
Chitonde Lee added that the suspect failed to provide supporting documentation, claiming the money had been given to him by a friend.
Iheanacho is expected to face charges of possessing foreign currency without a permit and attempting to externalize forex, in violation of Malawi’s Exchange Control Act.
