Police in Lilongwe have arrested a woman identified as Nsomba for allegedly attempting to kill her 7-month-old baby by poisoning.
According to Kawale Police spokesperson Mabvuto Precious Phiri, the incident occurred on March 25, 2026, in Area 38.
Police say the suspect had earlier left the child in the care of a housemaid and the child’s grandmother. Later that night, she returned and took the baby into her room. Shortly after, the infant began coughing continuously, raising alarm.
The grandmother and maid rushed in and took the baby to the bathroom, where the child started vomiting. They reportedly noticed a strong smell of chemicals, prompting them to search the suspect, where they allegedly found a bottle containing the substance.
The baby was first taken to Bwaila Hospital before being referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital, where the child is said to be in stable condition and expected to survive.
The matter was reported to police, leading to the suspect’s arrest on March 26. She is expected to appear in court soon.
