Police in Nsanje have arrested two men, Madalitso Richard Simitala, 28, and Micheck Joza Simitala, 26, on suspicion of killing their 70-year-old grandmother, Felia Simitala, over allegations of witchcraft.

Nsanje Police spokesperson, Jabulani Ng’oma, confirmed the incident, saying it occurred during the night of the 14th into the early hours of the 15th of this month at the home of the deceased’s daughter, Maureen Gomiwa, 35.

According to Ng’oma, the victim was sleeping in her daughter’s house when the suspects allegedly carried out the attack. Gomiwa reportedly heard unusual noises during the night and went to check on her mother’s room, where she found the two men inside.

One of the suspects is said to have grabbed the elderly woman by the throat, prompting Gomiwa to raise an alarm, which caused the attackers to flee the scene.

It was later discovered that the victim had sustained a deep neck wound and was rushed to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police say the suspects are in custody and will appear in court soon to answer a charge of murder.
