The First Grade Magistrate’s Court in Balaka has sentenced a 31-year-old man, Sympathy Miliward Macford, to six years’ imprisonment with hard labour for burglary and theft.

According to Balaka Police Public Relations Officer Gladson M’bumpha, the court heard through state prosecutor Inspector Liston Sabola that Macford broke into the house of Yusuf Kaukutu on the night of December 15–16, 2026, and stole a motorcycle valued at K2.5 million.

Macford pleaded not guilty to the charges, prompting the state to call five witnesses. Their testimony proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.

In his ruling, First Grade Magistrate Augustine Mizaya agreed with the prosecution’s call for a stiff penalty and imposed a six-year custodial sentence with hard labour to deter similar offences.
