The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has joined Malawians in commemorating the life and legacy of the country’s former president, Bingu wa Mutharika, who died on April 5, 2012.
In a press statement, the party paid tribute to Mutharika, describing him as a transformative leader, disciplined economist, and patriot whose leadership reshaped Malawi’s development trajectory. He was also recognized as the founder of the DPP and a champion of results-driven governance and national ambition.
The DPP highlighted key achievements during his presidency, including economic reforms, improved food security, and infrastructure development. The Farm Input Subsidy Programme was singled out as a landmark initiative that demonstrated Malawi’s potential for self-reliance.
The party emphasized that Mutharika’s legacy continues to inspire, calling on Malawians to uphold values such as disciplined leadership, self-reliance, and bold decision-making in pursuit of national progress.
The statement also acknowledged the continued leadership of Arthur Peter Mutharika, noting that his stewardship reflects the enduring principles upon which the DPP was founded.
Meanwhile, Mutharika died at the age of 78 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Lilongwe. He was initially treated locally before being flown to South Africa, where his death was later confirmed.
