The Roads Fund Administration (RFA) says it has collected gross toll revenue amounting to K1.8 billion between January and March this year, marking a significant increase from K920 million recorded during the same period last year.

The K880 million rise represents a 96 percent growth in revenue.

Speaking to journalists in Lilongwe, RFA Director of Finance Alex Makhwatha attributed the increase to the recent adjustment in toll fees.

“It means that there are now more resources available for road maintenance and rehabilitation,” said Makhwatha.

He also commended the government for amending tolling regulations and increasing toll rates, noting that the move will enhance the institution’s capacity to fund road maintenance and construction.

Meanwhile, governance expert Mabvuto Bamusi said the development reflects the commitment by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)-led administration to improving road infrastructure in the country.

“The Mutharika administration is walking the talk and delivering on its promise to ensure that money from toll gates and road levies is managed in a transparent and accountable manner,” said Bamusi.

The RFA has also announced plans to construct additional toll gates over the next three years, starting with four in the 2026/27 financial year.

Proposed locations include Mkamanga in Mponela and Gwayi in Nkhamenya along the M001 Road, Chileka on the Lilongwe–Mchinji Road, and Naluva on the Lilongwe–Salima Road.

Toll gates were officially introduced in Malawi in November 2021 with the commissioning of the Chingeni Toll Plaza in Balaka District, following the government’s tolling project initiated in 2016.
