Man Arrested for Chopping Off Alleged Sweet Potato Thief’s Fingers in Mangochi

A 66-year-old man, Mavuto Saulos, has been arrested in Monkey Bay for allegedly cutting off three fingers of Chikondi Samuel’s left hand with a machete after accusing him of stealing sweet potatoes from his field.
According to Monkey Bay Police publicist Sergeant Kondwani James, the incident came to light after a video showing the assault went viral on social media on June 5, 2026.
Police arrested Saulos on June 6 and charged him with grievous harm.
Samuel is receiving treatment at Monkey Bay Community Hospital and is expected to face a theft charge after recovering.
Saulos, from Bonomali Village in Traditional Authority Namkumba, Mangochi, is expected to appear in court soon.
