Police in Dowa have arrested three members of the same family for allegedly vandalising their aunt’s house and property after accusing her of practising witchcraft.
Dowa Police spokesperson Alice Sitima identified the suspects as Timuone Sekelani, 22, Cosmas Sekelani, 25, and their sister, Nakhilita Sekelani, 29, all from Singo Village in Traditional Authority Mkukula in Dowa District.
Sitima said the three are also facing charges of attempting to commit suicide after allegedly taking medication in fear of being arrested. They were taken to Dowa District Hospital by well-wishers, where they received treatment.
According to Sitima, the incident stemmed from a mental health condition affecting the suspects’ brother. The family had taken him to Mozambique for treatment, but he reportedly escaped before receiving medical assistance.
She said relatives in Mozambique later informed the family by phone that the man had run away. The news allegedly angered the suspects, who blamed their aunt for his condition, accusing her of witchcraft.
The three allegedly vandalised their aunt’s house and destroyed some of her property.
The matter was reported to Chezi Police Unit, prompting officers to launch an investigation that led to the arrest of the suspects.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon to answer charges relating to malicious damage to property.
