Police in Dowa have arrested a man, Rodwell Nduna, on suspicion of murdering his uncle after accusing him of practising witchcraft.

According to Dowa Police spokesperson Alice Sitima, the incident occurred on April 13 this year, but the suspect had been on the run until his arrest at Chankhungu Trading Centre in the district.

Sitima said the deceased had allegedly been subjected to repeated accusations and insults from some family members who claimed he was involved in witchcraft.

In an effort to resolve the dispute, community leaders reportedly organized a meeting to discuss the matter.

However, while the discussions were still underway, Nduna allegedly picked up a hammer and repeatedly struck his uncle on the head.

The victim collapsed and lost consciousness, prompting community members to rush him to hospital for treatment.

He was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Police have since charged Nduna in connection with the killing and he is expected to appear before court soon to answer the charge.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of witchcraft-related accusations, which continue to fuel violence and loss of life in some communities.
