Thirty-two men have been arrested for child rape between January and June this year in Nkhotakota District, compared to no more than 15 arrested during the same period last year.
Nkhunga Police spokesperson in Dwangwa, Andrew Kamanga, said 17 of the suspects were arrested in the Nkhunga policing area.
They were under the age of 40 and allegedly raped children aged between 12 and 15.
Nkhotakota Police spokesperson Chisomo Chuma said the remaining 15 suspects, arrested in the Nkhotakota policing area, were aged between 17 and 69.
They allegedly abused children aged between three and 17.
Kamanga and Chuma attributed the rise in child rape cases to harmful cultural practices, lack of parental guidance, and the belief that having sex with a child can bring wealth.
