The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) has relocated its repatriation operations from Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre to Joyce Chitsulo Stadium in Mwanza as efforts to bring home Malawians stranded in South Africa continue.
According to Dodma, the new location will enable officials to process returnees closer to the Malawi–South Africa border and improve coordination of transport and other support services.
Director of Preparedness Charles Matabwa said the relocation is aimed at making the repatriation exercise more efficient.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that all affected Malawians are safely assisted until they reach their final destinations.
Dodma estimates that about 8,000 Malawians remain in temporary camps in Durban awaiting repatriation. So far, around 3,000 citizens have successfully returned to Malawi. Meanwhile, 20 buses are on their way to South Africa to transport more returnees back home.
The government says the repatriation exercise will continue until all stranded Malawians have been assisted.
