The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has temporarily closed three football stadiums, Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, Joyce Chitsulo Stadium in Mwanza and Champions Stadium in Mponela, until further notice.
In a statement, FAM said Bingu National Stadium has been closed to facilitate a pre-inspection exercise in line with Confederation of African Football (CAF) stadium regulations. The assessment is intended to identify areas requiring improvement before the association submits a formal request for an official CAF inspection.
Joyce Chitsulo Stadium has also been closed after being designated as a temporary accommodation centre for Malawian nationals returning from South Africa. As a result, the venue will not be available for football matches or other sporting activities during this period.
Meanwhile, Champions Stadium remains closed following extensive damage caused by heavy rains and strong winds that recently hit Mponela. The damage affected critical infrastructure, including sections of the stadium’s roof and other essential facilities.
FAM said the stadium will remain closed until rehabilitation works are completed and a safety inspection confirms that it is fit for use.
The association has assured stakeholders that it will provide further updates on the reopening of the affected venues as the situation develops.
