The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced the temporary closure of Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, Joyce Chitsulo Stadium in Mwanza and Champions Stadium in Mponela, meaning the venues will not host football matches or any other sporting activities until further notice.

According to FAM, Bingu National Stadium has been closed to allow for a pre-inspection exercise in line with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Stadium Regulations. The assessment is intended to identify areas that require improvement before the stadium is submitted for an official CAF inspection.

Meanwhile, Joyce Chitsulo Stadium has been temporarily closed because it is currently being used to accommodate Malawian nationals returning from South Africa following the recent xenophobic attacks. As a result, the venue will not be available for football activities during this period.

FAM also said Champions Stadium remains closed after suffering extensive damage from heavy rains and strong winds that recently hit Mponela. The bad weather damaged key infrastructure, including sections of the stadium’s roof and other essential facilities.

The association says Champions Stadium will remain closed until rehabilitation works are completed and the venue passes a safety inspection.

FAM has assured stakeholders that it will continue providing updates on the reopening of the affected stadiums.
