There was an emotional scene at the Balaka Second Grade Magistrate’s Court after a woman pleaded for mercy moments after her husband was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment with hard labour for assaulting her and causing the loss of her left eye.
Balaka Police Public Relations Officer Gladson M’bumpha said the incident occurred shortly after the court convicted Blackson Godfrey, 27, a bicycle taxi (kabaza) operator, of causing grievous harm to his wife, Catherine George.
According to M’bumpha, the case came to the attention of police through the intervention of Women’s Rights Learning Centre (WORLEC), a local non-governmental organisation that advocates for the rights of women and girls.
Second Grade Magistrate Peter Nkuzi sentenced Godfrey to five years’ imprisonment with hard labour after finding him guilty of the offence.
Moments after the sentence was handed down, Catherine George left the public gallery and approached the bench, tearfully pleading with the magistrate to show mercy to her husband.
However, the court had already concluded the proceedings and the magistrate had risen, leaving the sentence unchanged.
The incident drew the attention of those present in court, highlighting the emotional and complex nature of some domestic violence cases.
