The Second Grade Magistrate’s Court in Nkhata Bay has convicted and sentenced 31-year-old Amos Maxwell Banda, from Machinga District, to 36 months’ imprisonment with hard labour for personating a member of the Malawi Defence Force (MDF).
State Prosecutor Sub-Inspector Andrew Singini told the court that Banda falsely presented himself as an MDF soldier based at Chilumba Barracks to lure women into sexual relationships. During the deception, he impregnated two women in the district.
Appearing before Second Grade Magistrate Elincy Nyirongo, Banda pleaded guilty but asked the court for leniency, saying he was a first-time offender and the sole breadwinner for his family.
The state, however, sought a stiffer sentence, arguing that such offences were becoming increasingly common in the district.
In delivering judgment, Magistrate Nyirongo agreed with the prosecution and sentenced Banda to 36 months’ imprisonment with hard labour, saying the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others.
