Chanthunya to be extradited to Malawi

A court in South Africa has allowed the extradition of fugive and murder suspect, Misozi Chanthunya, Principal Secretary in Malawi’s Ministry of Justice Anthony Kamanga has confirmed.

Kamanga has since said Chanthunya has appealed against the ruling.

The appeal, according to Kamanga, means that he will still remain in custody in South Africa until the appeal case is heard in which, among others, he fears that he will be executed.

The Malawi Republican constitution recognises death sentence but no President has signed a death warrant since 1994 when the country adopted multiparty democracy.

Chanthunya was arrested in South Africa in January 23 after a year on the run for allegedly killing his Zimbabwean girlfriend Linda Gasa.

Gasa was found entombed in Chanthunya’s private cottage in Mangochi in September 2010.

It is reported that the two went to Mangochi to discuss Gasa’s pregnancy which Chanthunya wanted her to abort but she refused.
