LILONGWE – The Ministry of Health and Population has acknowledged disposing of some vehicles this year through a committee but has denied any discussion about selling them involving the minister and other top officials. Saying that a committee handles the issue not the ministry.

According to a statement released by the ministry’s spokesperson Joshua Malango, the committee among others consists of Treasury, Auditor General and PVHA.

This follows social media reports that Principal Secretary to the ministry Dan Namarika bought six vehicles at a price of K120 000 each.

The Ministry of Health and Population did dispose of a selection of vehicles early in 2018 following a committee based process that is approved by the OPC. These committee reviews the vehicles and makes a decision as to the value of maintaining certain vehicles as opposed to disposing of them through a public auction. The recommended vehicles are submitted to the Treasury who together with the Public Procurement and Disposal Assets, formerly ODPP, then inspect the vehicles before appointing an auctioneer to sell of the vehicles.
