HRCC Cautions MCP on capital punishment

The Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) has cautioned the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to tread carefully on introducing capital punishment to all convicts in the abductions and killings of persons with albinism.

During the launch of the MCP manifesto in Lilongwe, the party singled out execution of all sentenced people as one of the solutions in dealing with atrocities that persons with albinism are facing in the country.

Chairperson for HRCC Robert Mkwezalamba said if the MCP is voted into power, it should consider engaging with relevant stakeholders and having a referendum before implementing the law.

Mkwezalamba said such punishments cannot be applicable in Malawi due to numerous international instruments that the country signed.

He said so far the country has made progress in addressing abductions and killings of persons with albinism.

Mkwezalamba however suggested that the country should do more by apprehending people behind the abductions and killings.

“If we managed to do so obviously appropriate punishments could have been proper but what we are having now is speculation that the suspects who are being apprehended are not actual master minders,” he said.
