Youths in the country have been urged to take an initiative in facilitating projects aimed at conserving environment and turn waste products in their areas into reusable products as this is part of their social responsibility.
The call was sounded on Saturday when Anthu Aluso initiative in partnership with Nature kit organization with financial support from USAID through world connect organised Sesa youth Project, a clean up campaign at Zingwangwa market in Blantyre.
Speaking in an interview, founder of Anthu Aluso innitiave Eneless Pemba said the Sesa youth Project is aimed at empowering young people with art and craft skills as well as entrepreneurship skills where among others they are taught on how to turn waste into viable products such as bracelets and necklets which they are able to sale at a profit.
“We did an assessment at the township about the need to make the place clean, so we decided to solve waste management by ending littering around the community by empowering the youths in the area through waste management and venture into entrepreneurship.
“As for today, we trained youths on how to make reusable labeled bins which we will distribute to the community and crafts which we will conduct an art exhibition and open a shop to sell our products,” said Pemba who is also visual artist.
Added youth activist: “We hope through initiative like this, will improve the living standards of people living in the township since the youth will gain financial independence through selling the craft made from trash and skills which they can’t get them from anywhere.
During the launch of the project they also led young people in sweeping exercise of Zingwangwa Market as part of sensitizing the community on their social responsibility of looking after their surroundings considering health benefits brought about by such activities.
She therefore called for support from other organisations and well wishers to help in sustaining the project arguing that the project is meant to stay despite having sponsorship deadline from incumbent funders.
