Kanyenda fails trials at Amazulu

Flames striker Esau Kanyenda’s hopes of returning to South African football hit a snag after he failed to make the grade during trials at Amazulu.

The striker, who has not featured for the Flames’ recent games, opted to go for the trials at Amazulu despite being offered an outright contract at Black Leopards.

Kanyenda told a local radio station on Tuesday that he would now go to Denmark where former Flames coach Kim Splidsboel promised to attach him to a team.

Kanyenda said he chose to go to Amazulu instead of Black Leopards because there are many Malawians at Leopards and his presence there might jeopardise chances of his compatriots since South Africa has quota for foreign players.

“At that time there were rumours that Black Leopards were intending to loan Davie Banda and I didn’t want this to happen because of my arrival him being a countryman,” Kanyenda said.

The striker, who launched his professional career at South Africa’s Jomo Cosmos, said he would be leaving for Denmark next week.

Commenting on his future with the Flames, he said he would be able to make a decision depending on how things turn out in Denmark, but was quick to praise the current youthful squad.

“After all the current players are doing very well and in most cases a coach doesn’t change a winning side,” he said.

However, he said his non-commitment does not mean he was done with the Flames
