Unilever Malawi to resume production

Unilever Malawi is expected to resume production any day this week.

The company stopped production a couple of months ago due to an acute shortage of foreign exchange which hit Malawi in the last 20 months of the former ruling DPP administration.

A senior employee at the company confided that all the employees who were sent on leave have been recalled.

“We are expecting production to start on Monday , but we are not going full swing. We will start with a number of products such as Maluwa soap and Kazinga small,” said the source.

The source further said the company has also managed to pay back 85 percent of its debt to Unilever Kenya.

But Unilever Malawi Managing Director Raymond Banda could neither confirm nor deny the reports.

Quizzed as to when Unilever products will be back on the local market, Banda said he could not give out the information as the company’s policy only allows issuance of a press release and not interviews.

“We will issue a press release within the week and you just have to wait for that, but you can go ahead and publish whatever information you have,” said Banda.

He further said the contents in the press release are however good news.

Unilever is one of the oldest manufacturing companies in the country and its production suspension left a yawning gap on the local market.
