The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has resolved to allow journalists on duty to vote from anywhere, faceofmalawi can reveal.
This has been disclosed in a press statement released on Sunday May 19, 2019 by MEC Chief Elections Officer Sam Alfandika made available to faceofmalawi reporter.
According to Alfandika, the development follows a lengthy discution between the electoral body top officials and Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA-Malawi) executive led by its Chairperson Teresa Temweka Ndanga.
“Journalists on duty will be allowed to vote where they will be assigned to cover the elections. To facilitate this process, journalists will be expected to collect “Authority to vote Elsewhere” from the Constituency Returning Officers where they will vote. This process will only be facilitated upon production of a MEC Accreditation ID for journalists and a valid voter certificate,” reads in part the statement.
Misa Malawi Chairperson Teresa Ndanga has since applauded MEC for quick response to the request.
Ndanga then urged journalists to adhere to the instructions.
“Please follow the instructions as provided by MEC in the accompanying letter.
“MISA wishes you all the best as you exercise your right to vote and be heard. We would also like to urge all journalists to cover the elections professionally,” said Ndanga.
Malawi will hold its second tripartite election on Tuesday.
