Lorry driver detained for carrying ballot boxes in Zomba released

Police in Zomba has released the driver of a lorry, who was arrested in Zomba, for transporting ballots boxes without police supervision.

He was arrested on his way from Mangochi to the Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) warehouse in Blantyre.

Eastern region Police deputy public relations officer, Inspector Lawrence Phiri, has identified the driver as Christopher Katunga, 47, of Pitamtunda village Traditional Authority (T/A) Mlumbe Zomba.

Katunga faces a charge of negligence to fulfil his obligation, as mandated contrary to section 115 as read with section 118 of the parliamentary and Presidential act.

Phiri, however, says the vehicle, registration number TPE 2102, has since been released under supervision by the police and is on its way to Blantyre. Katunga is still the one driving the vehicle
