UDF plans to go into alliance with PP

The former ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) is planning to go into a political alliance with the ruling People’s Party (PP) following its long-standing leadership squabbles, Face Of Malawi has learnt.

According to sources within the party, UDF is expected to sign a memorandum of understanding with the PP soon.

But when contacted for comment, the UDF’s acting president Friday Jumbe told Capital Radio that he could not “pre-empt” about the development now.

“If that is possible you will hear that point but we can’t pre-empt it now. If you want to go into a relationship, do you talk about it before you have gone into that relationship, is that not being overzealous? So I wouldn’t really want to comment on this issue,” said Jumbe.

The UDF seems to be running out of time on what to do about a presidential candidate for the 2014 presidential elections.

With less than two years before the country goes to the polls, the party remains split in two factions, and talks to unify the two camps have so far yielded no results.

With no clear decision as to who will be fielded as its presidential candidate

There was no immediate comment from the ruling people’s party.
