Human rights activists Trapence and Sembereka Moved to Area 30 Police in Lilongwe

The two human rights activists Gift Trapence and MacDonald Sembereka who were detained on Tuesday over alleged fraud have been moved to National Police Headquarters at area 30 in Lilongwe.

Rights activist and member of Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) Billy Mayaya, has confirmed to local press in an interview on Wednesday morning.

Mayaya said the police have not yet disclosed the reasons for transferring the two.

He said that the police have not yet leveled any charges against the two and that they are expected to appear before the court soon.

Trapence, who is HRDC Vice Chairperson and Sembereka have been key figures behind nationwide demonstrations demanding the resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah.

National police spokesman, James Kadadzera was not immediately available for comment but he said on Tuesday that the two are suspected to have misappropriated money from UNAids.
