Muluzi asks HRDC to suspend anti-Ansah demonstrations slated for Thursday

Former President Bakili Muluzi has asked the Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC) to suspend the Thursday protests to allow him to meet appointing authority of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson, Jane Ansah.

Muluzi said this during a meeting between him and HRDC aimed and finding lasting solutions to the ongoing political disputes where Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and United Transformation Movement (UTM) are protesting the outcome of the May 21 polls.

He has asked for 7 days and, thereafter, he will give them feedback.

“… please allow me to meet the appointing authority of Dr. Ansah and l will give you feedback. One week is enough,” said Mutharika.

But Vice Chairperson of HRDC Gift Trapense says it will be difficult to suspend the protests because they are part of the dialogue.

On his part HRDC Chairperson Timothy Mtambo: “If Justice Jane Ansah steps down today, we will slow down, but will still cling to other emerging issues like corruption, impunity, threats on the leadership of HRDC, nepotism among others.”
