Director of Public Prosecution to Determine Way Forward on Lule’s Death

The Inspector General of Police Rodney Jose has said he is waiting for a determination from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to find a way forward on Buleya Lule’s death.

Lule died in police custody in Lilongwe, hours after appearing in court in the disappearance of a boy with albinism in Dedza district.

His death, in March this year, came after he allegedly threatened to reveal people behind the attacks, abductions and killings of persons with albinism.

An investigation by the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) revealed that Lule was electrocuted to death.

The MHRC recommended that the Police Chief should institute a criminal probe against officers who were on duty on the day.

The IG then instituted a special taskforce that submitted its findings and were forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
