JB meets investors at UN Assembly

Malawi President Joyce Banda has utilized her trip to the United Nations general assembly to attract potential investors and world business captains to invest in the land locked southern African country.

Presidential Press Secretary Mr Steven Nhlane also said the president on Wednesday the President was scheduled to meet renowned business captains to help Malawi recover economically.

“The President is focused on using this unique opportunity where so many leaders are gathered in one place to cement ties with the international community and attract investors to put Malawi back on the path to economic growth,” said Mr Nhlane in a statement.

He said among others President Banda is scheduled to meet and talk business with business magnate Mr. George Soros and his Open Society Foundation to support Malawi’s Presidential Initiative on Poverty and Hunger Reduction.

“She will also meet DuPont one of the largest agriculture companies in the world to discuss seed distribution and commercialization for farmers in Malawi,” said Mr Nhlane.

President Banda left the country Saturday for the summit where she is scheduled to make her UN Assembly maiden speech since her ascendency to the presidency in April, 2012.

However, headlines has it back home that the president’s trip is estimated to have cost Malawi tax payers K 308 million in air tickets and allowances and the President entourage that includes chiefs and party loyalists.
